not making it into Indian team Yuvraj Singh disappointment

All-rounder, Yuvraj Singh, on Wednesday said that he was disappointed at not making it into the Indian cricket team. After successfully fighting cancer, Yuvraj, made a brief return to the Indian team when he played Twenty20 matches, but he has been a pale shadow of himself on his comeback trail. He last played for India in a ODI in December 2013.

"Definitely, a comeback to the Indian team is a goal. It's always disappointing when you don't make it to the side. However, that said, the last two years have been patchy, up and down. Hopefully, things will change, and I will be picked again, otherwise life will be very depressing. I can only try and do my best," the left-handed batsman told Wisden India.

When asked if the thought of not being picked for India again ever crossed his mind, he said, "Of course, there is a possibility that I may never play for India again. I have considered that. However, there is also the possibility that I might play for India again, and as long as I believe that I can come back and I have it in me, I'm going to keep pushing myself."

Yuvraj said that he along with other sidelined and struggling players like Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir often talk about the good days.

"We always talk about the time we spent playing for India. We all know that those were the most amazing years of our lives. However, life still goes on, even when you're not in the team. You just have to be positive and keep working hard."

Yuvraj did not do much to stake claim in the national team, but he has still not given up.

"I can't really speak about selection. What is the best opportunity that I have? Duleep Trophy, the Ranji and whatever other games I can get. As I said, if I can make it to the squad, it will be a great story. It will be awesome to come back and play for India in a World Cup again. If it doesn't happen, life goes on, and it will be hard to accept, but Ill have to accept it," he concluded.

Kohli takes India to victory over Australia

Visakhapatnam: India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni today praised the batting department for scripting a five-wicket win over Australia in the second ODI, which also helped the hosts take an unassailable 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

"Yuvraj (Singh) and (Virat) Kohli got us back in the game and (Suresh) Raina supported Kohli well in the end. We wanted to see how much dew was around, I thought the spinners would get more turn but it turned out to be much flatter.

"(Cameron) White took the attack apart, but with Suresh Raina at the crease with one Powerplay to go I knew we had a chance. And Yuvraj, it was very important for him to get runs," Dhoni said after the match.

Kohli smashed a career-best 118, while Raina's 71 not out and Yuvraj's 58 also played crucial role.

"Kohli has been often criticised for giving away good starts and he batted perfectly today. We'll look to win the third game as well. We have eight to 10 games before the World Cup and we want to achieve more than just winning the games," he added.

Dhoni's opposite number Michael Clarke also credited the Indian batsmen for making the difference.

"Cameron White's innings was unbelievable, I thought 290 was enough but India chased well. We'll try to rebuild. We are disappointed with the result. We'll try to do better in the first 15 overs in the second game," he said.

However, he was happy with the efforts of his bowlers and said, "John Hastings did a fantastic job, (Mitchell) Starc has a bright future for Australia."

Meanwhile, Man of the Match Kohli said he was struggling with his cramp during the winning effort.

"I was struggling with cramps in my 70s and 80s. I just wanted to drag the game as much as I could to put my team in a winning position. (Murali) Vijay suggested that I just time the ball than hit it too hard. He helped calm me down.

"With Yuvraj batting at the other end, it's always helpful because he can score quickly and take the pressure off you. We just decided to build a partnership and bank on the Powerplay," he said.

Asked about batting at number three position, he said, "The team has shown trust in me to bat at No 3 and I'll just look to capitalise. Once the dew came in, the ball was coming on quite nicely and we tried to take advantage on that."

Virat Kohli smashed a career-best 118 as India relied on their young batting brigade to clinch a comfortable five-wicket win against Australia in a high-scoring second cricket one-dayer here.

Chasing a stiff target of 290, the young Kohli made full use of the opportunity to notch up his third ODI century, while Suresh Raina (71 n.o. off 47 balls) provided the finishing spark as the hosts romped home with seven balls to spare and took an unassailable 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The first match of the series was washed out without a single ball being bowled in Kochi.

The Australians were well served by their captain Michael Clarke, who signalled his return to form with an unbeaten 111, while Cameron White (89 n.o.) and Michael Hussey (69) were the other notable performers for the depleted visitors.

But their efforts turned out to be for a lost cause as the Indians capitalised on a good batting track at ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium to clinch the game and marked Mahendra Singh Dhoni's 50th match as captain. Both the teams now travel to Margao for the third and final match on October 24. Replying to the target, India had a wobbly start when both the openers were dismissed early by Clint McKay.

Debutant Shikhar Dhawan had a forgettable outing as the southpaw was dismissed for a duck in the very second ball he faced.

In-form Murali Vijay (15) looked good before edging one to the wicketkeeper Paine to leave India reeling for 35 for two with McKay taking both the wickets.

But Yuvraj Singh (58 off 87 balls) and Kohli (11X4, 1x6) kept India's hopes alive as the duo repaired the damage in a style similar to that of Clarke and Hussey for the Aussies.

Yuvraj, who made a return to the side after being overlooked for the Test series, also looked good as he helped Kohli in setting the tone.

The stylish Punjab batsman survived some anxious moments but went on to score his half-century and appeared to be a relieved man.

Kohli developed cramps but the Delhi youngster maintained his run flow aided by Shikhar Dhawan as his runner.

Yuvraj, meanwhile, departed for after being deceived by a McKay slower as the third wicket stand yielded 137.

Raina, who cracked nine fours and a six, played a crucial knock after Yuvraj's departure as he took the pressure off Kohli with some big hits all over the ground.

The duo added 84 runs for the fourth wicket to take India closer home before Kohli departed for his best one-day score.

There was a little drama in store after Kohli's dismissal with skipper Dhoni (0) departing in quick succession but Raina ensured that India did not falter.

Raina, along with another debutant Saurabh Tiwary (12 n.o.), clinched the issue to keep an all-win record intact from three ODIs at the scenic venue in the coastal city.

Earlier Michael Clarke returned to form with his fifth century to help Australia post a challenging 289 for three.

Cameron White (89) also remained unbeaten while Mike Hussey made 69 at the Y.S. Rajsekhara Reddy Cricket Stadium.

Ashish Nehra removed openers Shaun Marsh (0) and Tim Paine (9) with just 16 runs on board, but Clarke and Hussey steadied the ship putting on 144 runs together.

Clarke hit seven four and a six in his 139-ball knock and Hussey had seven fours in his 77-ball stay. The duo never panicked and punished the bad deliveries to rebuild the innings.

Spinner R. Ashwin removed Hussey by trapping him leg before in the 37th over.

Clarke and vice-captain White then smashed the Indian bowlers all over the park as Australia scored 114 runs in the last 10 overs.

White's 89 came off 49 balls and included six fours and six overboundaries and his powerful hitting helped Australia score 49 runs in the five overs of batting powerplay between 43rd and 47th overs.

Nehra, who had impressive figures of 4-1-3-2 in his first spell, had to suffer at the hands of both White and Clarke, who were in a rampaging mood in the closing stages of the match. Nehra conceded 54 runs in his last six overs and returned with 57 runs from his 10 overs.

Why so much fuss about Yuvraj being dropped?

Yuvraj Singh says he is not out of form and that the selectors have been harsh in dropping him. For starters, Yuvraj’s average in 2010 is 21 in ODIs and 23 in test matches. There are at least 5 other batsmen in the middle order in domestic cricket including the newly inducted Cheteshwar Pujara who have averaged well above 50 in the last one year. So, who is unfair Mr. Yuvraj?

Why so much fuss about Yuvraj being dropped

Yuvraj Singh has been dropped. This news has come as a bomb for the prince of Punjab. In what has been a sign of 'enough is enough' the selectors have sent out a warning to Yuvi to get fit soon or face the axe even for the World Cup. The dashing batsman is out of the Aussie series and will have to fight it out to secure a place in the squad for the series against New Zealand that follows immediately afterwards.

Why so much fuss about Yuvraj being dropped

Yuvraj however has come out and said he was bitterly disappointed and refuted talk of poor form and fitness. "Selection is not in my hands. In Sri Lanka I played two games, in the first I scored a hundred and a fifty in the second. If that's not good enough, I can't say," he said.

"Not a great feeling. For the last seven years I have been trying to cement my place in the Test team but have not been able to do that. And that is a big disappointment. The reasons may be many. The first reason even I don't know," he added.

" If I continue to be dropped like this, definitely I will have to look for something else," he said jokingly.

Why so much fuss about Yuvraj being dropped

Yuvraj has said he is not out of form. We are certainly baffled by what he has said. Do statistics lie?

Yuvraj's form book

Yuvraj has been dreadfully out of form in recent times. In 2010, he has played in 3 test matches and has averaged just 23.5. His total test score for the year is 92 and his best effort came against Sri Lanka in the Galle test, where he made 52 in one of the innings.

His ODI form has been nothing to write home about either. In 9 ODIs this year, Yuvraj has averaged 21 with the bat and has not scored a single 100. This is not the first time such a situation has come for the gifted batsman, who has lost it completely in recent times, both physically and mentally. If he is complaining, he must take a look at his fellow countrymen in the same game, who have toiled for years now and yet struggle to find a place leave alone cementing one.

Many better than Yuvi

If Yuvraj has reasons to say words like 'if that was not good enough', MSN now takes a look at 5 other players who will have a 101 questions.

Cheteshwar Pujara

Pujara has been the in-form player in Indian domestic cricket for some time now. His selection for the Oz series has been automated after a double hundred against West Indies 'A' side in June this year. It is very hard to forget that sensational triple hundred he got against Orissa 2 years ago. If that was not enough, Pujara got himself another double hundred the last Ranji tournament and finished the season with an outstanding average of 79. He is just 22 and technically one of the brightest prospects to play the longest version.

Subramaniam Badrinath

A name that is now more popular in Australia than India one would have to say after his exploits in the Emerging Players' tournament down under over the last 2 to 3 years. Badri has been 'The Wall' for Tamil Nadu and scored a mammoth 599 runs during the last season. Mammoth considering Tamil Nadu could not progress past the quarterfinal stage. His average for the season was a staggering 85.57.

Why so much fuss about Yuvraj being dropped

Manoj Tiwary

Tiwary has been hanging around for some time now. He has been making the 14 but finds it difficult to make the playing XI. Not the player to lose heart, Tiwary invariably looks at domestic cricket season after season to keep him going. And that has helped him. His Ranji season of 2009 wasn't the best by his standards and yet he managed to eek out an average of 57.

Why so much fuss about Yuvraj being dropped

Virat Kohli

Another prodigious talent, Virat Kohli has tested his guns on ODI and T20 formats. Now is the time for the 23-year-old to make it bigger and scale to the next level of cricket. Busy with national duty at most times, Kohli made sure he was there for Delhi whenever he was free. And didn't that make a difference? Just 3 matches and Kohli scored a huge 374 runs at no less than 93 a piece.

Why so much fuss about Yuvraj being dropped

jinkya Rahane

Hailing from the same place as master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, cricket comes naturally for Ajinkya Rahane. He played a big role in helping Mumbai win the Ranji trophy last year. Didn't do much in the final at Mysore but his tournament record speaks for itself. 809 runs with an average of 73.54. Can't get much better.

The biggest problem with Yuvraj throughout his cricketing career has been domestic cricket or the lack of it. Among the current generation players, Yuvraj is notorious for missing out on domestic cricket for prolonged periods.

Yuvraj's first-class record
Matches Runs Highest score Average 100s 50s
91 5523 209 43.46 17 26

He hardly plays first-class cricket. In his career spanning so many years, Yuvi has played only 91first-class matches and averages a modest 43. Compare this with someone like VVS Laxman, who bats in almost the same position as Yuvi does. 244 first-class matches.

What should Yuvraj do now?

Pack his kit bag and head to the nearest ground, which is host to domestic cricket. Yuvi might not have those beauties glaring at him in domestic matches and may be that will help him focus better.

Yuvraj's tax consultant, while refuting the claims of tax authorities, put the onus on IPL franchise KPH Dream, which owns Kings XI Punjab, for the payment of service tax for availing the cricketer's services in promotional activities during the IPL matches.

"We have served notice on Yuvraj Singh asking him to pay service tax amounting to Rs 1.15 crore on money he earned from two IPL seasons and doing endorsements," a senior official of the Central excise department, Chandigarh region, said.

Serving the notice by including the income of Yuvraj under 'Business Auxiliary Services' head, the department has assessed the service tax amounting to Rs 96.44 lakh from playing two seasons of IPL and Rs 19.53 lakh from participating in TV show 'Dus Ka Dum' and engaging in promotional activities for two agencies - Cornerstone Sports and Rhiti Sports.

The Central excise department has calculated an income of Rs 8.51 crore from IPL matches, Rs 99.99 lakh from winning 'Dus Ka Dum' show last year and Rs 65.30 lakh from promotional activities for two agencies, as per the notice.
