Alicia Silverstone: Ain’t so ‘clueless’

Now this is one babe who sure knows a thing or two about living a green lifestyle. Actress Alicia Silverstone has come a long way from playing an on-screen airhead to becoming someone we can look up to!

The 34-year-old star, who shot to fame with movies like Clueless (1995) and her portrayal of Batgirl in Batman & Robin, has long campaigned for the sake of the environment. And she's found inventive ways to be green-conscious herself, whether it's using energy-saving appliances at home, putting solar panels on the roof, or even recycling the flooring from an old bowling alley to make her table top.

"It's just so lovely to appreciate the trees and birds and animals," she says. "Everything you do in the name of the environment not only saves your health, it saves your soul."

Though Alicia, does admit that going green is not easy and unless you enjoy it, it won't last. "But you can save money and have fun doing it," she says.

Alicia has been a vegan for over a decade, but she knows that it's not for everyone. She does suggest eating plant-based foods which are not only healthy, but support local farmers and help save the planet.

In 1998, after attending an animal rights meeting, she said "I realized that I was the problem. I was an animal lover who was eating animals." In 2004, Silverstone was voted, "Sexiest Female Vegetarian," by PETA.

In 2007, Silverstone also famously appeared nude in a print advertisement and 30-second commercial for PETA championing vegetarianism. She even authored the best-selling book 'The Kind Diet' that reveals the secrets of her great looks and knockout figure making her a leading voice for the green foodie movement and advocating the benefits of a plant-based diet to the mainstream.

"By just reducing our meat intake by 20% creates the same energy savings as switching a standard car for a Prius," she urges.

What's more, Alicia even has her own blog that covers everything from the benefits of buying second-hand, to cruelty-free fashion and garden composting tips. Supporting sustainable businesses and experimenting with earth-friendly practices, Alicia doesn't just talk the talk, but also walks the walk!

Alicia drives a Toyota Prius and is quick to point out that this trendy choice is not just eco-friendly, but also economical. The car features an emissions-free electric motor and gets better mileage than a standard car.

Even at home, Alicia is a committed environmentalist. All of her appliances are energy efficient and she suggests switching yours to Energy Star. Her home has solar panels installed for heating and cooling. And she even does her shopping at 'green' departmental stores.

Through her blogs, Alicia encourages people to say no to plastic bags (instead carry your own bags, she suggests). And while ordering take-out don't accept plastic plates, forks, knives etc if you are not going to use it. Alicia does so herself!

"I try to be environmentally responsible in everything I do and everything I bring into my life," she was quoted in a magazine. "Every time I make a decision, I think, "How is this going to affect the environment?" So if I need mouthwash, I'm not going to buy a huge plastic bottle filled with toxins -- I'm going to look for a brand that uses clean ingredients and comes in a recycled bottle. I do the same thing when I make other decisions about my health, home, and food. I really think hard about what is the most responsible choice."

Alicia also endorses green products! She recently partnered with EcoTools to launch a line of eco- and wallet-friendly cosmetics brushes and tote bags.

Made with natural hemp materials and lined with recycled PET, the planet-forward lineup is Silverstone tried and tested. "I even spilled soy sauce on one, threw it in the washer and it turned out great," she says.

Like we said at the start of this article, no 'clueless' girl, this!
